Series or Standalone: Series, Three Dark Crowns
Published: September 20th, 2016
Publisher: Harper Teen
Goodreads Synopsis: “Every generation on the island of Fennbirn, a set of triplets is born: three queens, all equal heirs to the crown and each possessor of a coveted magic. Mirabella is a fierce elemental, able to spark hungry flames or vicious storms at the snap of her fingers. Katharine is a poisoner, one who can ingest the deadliest poisons without so much as a stomachache. Arsinoe, a naturalist, is said to have the ability to bloom the reddest rose and control the fiercest of lions.
But becoming the Queen Crowned isn’t solely a matter of royal birth. Each sister has to fight for it. And it’s not just a game of win or lose…it’s life or death. The night the sisters turn sixteen, the battle begins. The last queen standing gets the crown.
If only it was that simple. Katharine is unable to tolerate the weakest poison, and Arsinoe, no matter how hard she tries, can’t make even a weed grow. The two queens have been shamefully faking their powers, taking care to keep each other, the island, and their powerful sister Mirabella none the wiser. But with alliances being formed, betrayals taking shape, and ruthless revenge haunting the queens’ every move, one thing is certain: the last queen standing might not be the strongest…but she may be the darkest.”
I’ll be straightforward and honest with this review: it’s not perfect. It has many imperfections that some people find to be too blunt to ignore. I see their points and agree, but at the same time, I loved this book.
Now, stop being so shocked that I gave a book with imperfections five stars. I loved the characters from this novel. I felt like all the queens were all extremely strong characters. I loved each their personalities. I have so much I want to say, but can’t because of spoilers. My favorite character had to be
The book focused more on the side character of one of the queens (not going to say who), but I was personally fine with that. I feel like it made the book more unique in a way.
The plot was as the synopsis stated. I loved how it took off though. The plot focused on the three sisters and their lives. I really liked how we got to see how each queen was instead of just following one of them the entire book. That’s what made the book more of a five star read for me. If we had only followed one queen, for example: Katherine, I feel like we wouldn’t have gotten the entire story.
The last 50 pages leave you needing more while also leaving you crying because you can’t get more for another year.
Rating: 5/5 Hot Aliens
